Steel mills contain furnaces, flames and processes that emit carbon monoxide (CO). CO, combined with other airborne particles from smelting and steelmaking, create a potentially dangerous situation for mill personnel.

All areas of a mill can contain dangerous concentrations of air contaminants and CO. Enclosed areas are especially susceptible to accumulations of carbon monoxide.
