NET SAFETY MONITORING CEO MARLENE COFFEY PROFILED IN UPCOMING ISSUE OF CME 20/20 MAGAZINE - 09.16.09
Canada's largest trade and industry association, CME promotes the continuous improvement of Canadian manufacturing
and exporting through engagement of government at all levels. Its mandate is to promote the competitiveness of
Canadian manufacturers and enable the success of Canadian goods and services exporters in markets around the world.
In order to support this mission CME has been producing 20/20 Magazine since 2006.
Different. Innovative. Edgy. Informative. That's how 20/20 readers describe the industry association publication.
20/20's goal is to tackle the issues others won't and to provide readers with insightful information that is of value to any business
and to the Canadian industry today.
The upcoming issue has a special feature, "Women in Manufacturing" in which Marlene Coffey, CEO of Net Safety Monitoring Inc.
was asked to contribute her perspective and share some of her experiences.
Here is an exerpt from the article:
An entrepreneur at heart, Marlene Coffey always wanted to own her own company. When Coffey became owner and chief executive officer of Calgary, AB-based Net Safety Monitoring Inc., the public sentiment that the manufacturing sector presents barriers to women never entered her mind. And almost 15 years later, this innovative, dynamic woman in manufacturing has yet to experience what the public perceives as a "man's world."
"I have not faced obstacles being a woman in manufacturing," says Coffey. "I believe there are more men in industry simply because women are not considering it as a career choice."
With more women than men currently employed in Canada, women should think again about a career in Canada's largest business sector.
Net Safety exemplifies the reality of Canadian manufacturing - a global leader in the design, development and manufacture of fixed toxic and combustible gas detection, flame detectors, safety systems, and ancillary safety and security products - the organization is committed to maintaining a high level of workplace safety and provides a variety of employee health and well-being benefits. Recognized as Calgary Manufacturing Industry's 2008 Best Employer,
Coffey's leadership has transformed the "Net Safety team" into just that -- a close-knit group that works closely together.
The Net Safety team is represented by many women. "More women are entering the marketing side, although men still outnumber women on the production floor," says Coffey. But perhaps the perception of manufacturing is changing with the next-generation. This spring when four university students visited Net Safety to evaluate their manufacturing process to provide improvements to their flow, Coffey was pleased to find three of the four students were women.
Coffey believes manufacturing is a rewarding career choice. "There is never one day the same. It's always a learning curve, that's the fun part."
